Artist in residence - Hallands konstmuseum

Happy to spend some weeks in the west coast of Sweden.

Through Art in Halland's exchange program with the Art Consultants in Västerbotten, the artist Helena Wikström will live and work in Halland between 12-25 September, with Halland's Art Museum in Halmstad as her base. Among other things, she will visit archives, the Artisans' Collective Workshops in Varberg and Halmstad and the Onsala Peninsula with a focus on the place where Mary Wollstonecraft disembarked in 1795. In this way, she will be given the opportunity to immerse herself in what Halland looked like in the past, and at the same time find new connections to our contemporary.

Västerbotten Regional Art Grant

Very happy to receive Västerbotten regional Art Grant and the beautiful words:
Motivering: Helena Wikström ger sig orädd i kast med nya projekt, bemästrar nya tekniker och berättar nya historier. Genom sina arbeten kommunicerar konstnären ny kunskap, blottlägger tidigare okända sammanhang och kallar på uppmärksamhet kring aktuella frågeställningar. Det pågående projektet om dronten belyser utmaningar kring miljö, exotism, kolonialism, ställer frågor kring bildens trovärdighet och är tänkt att publiceras i bokform.

Helena Wikström är ytterst aktiv och synlig inom regionens konstsammanhang, bland annat som en av grundarna till Galleri Verkligheten, aktiv i Iaspis-gruppen samt ansvarig för programmet på Vita Kuben. Hennes konstnärskap håller genomgående hög kvalitet och är en av regionens mest framstående röster.

I am part of the group show "genom tusen strider och smekningar" at Tegen2 curated by Ida Rödén and Erik Berggren. Up and running until the 16th of October.

I am showing the dodo-mask and a sound piece made in collaboration with Henrik Oja and Lina Hognert.

Retake a place - Reuse a space

Happy to be part of this project and now in Rome between the 9.11 - 19.12 2021.

Circolo scandinavo is happy to have the opportunity to offer 5 grants in the frame of Retake a place, reuse a space, a one-year cultural project supported by Kulturkontakt Nord. Through our collaboration with Stalker, a collective practice based in Rome, Circolo Scandinavo invites 5 Nordic artists and researchers to join local inhabitants, artists, architects, and experts, for a collective exploration of unused or abandoned urban sites in the Eternal city.

The project aims to create connections between the specificity of the local situation and a global context from an ecological, social, cultural, and economic point of view. The artistic processes will be in the centre of a collective exploration producing interdisciplinary connections and allowing for unexpected meetings and new perspectives on crucial global challenges.

 The residence is part of the local cultural project, La Zattera (The Raft) and the Scuola di urbanesimo nomade (School of Nomadic Urbanism), led by Stalker and part of the cultural season of the City of Rome. Participants from both the Nordic region and Italy will have the possibility to develop artistic projects and knowledge building, with focus on reuse of existing urban sites, in parallel with the activities offered by the cultural program of La Zattera. 

 The situation of Rome will be used as a starting point because of its specific long history of reusing urban heritage, from monuments and historical events to small pieces of marble spolia in a church wall or ruins turned into parks and artificial landscapes. The project is a collaboration between Circolo Scandinavo, Stalker, South Iceland Biennal and Umeå school of architecture/UMARTS. Several collateral activities will take place on South Iceland and Umeå in 2022.

Umeå kommuns konststipendium 2019

Mottog Umeå kommuns konststipendium 2019 med den fina motiveringen:

”Berättelsen är central i Helena Wikströms konstnärskap och den gestaltas med hjälp av olika medier och metoder. Ibland arbetar Wikström solo, ibland i samarbete med andra.
Det är inte alla konstnärer som efter en kurs i animation ger sig på att göra en hel dokumentärfilm, men det gjorde Wikström!
Resultatet blev den historiska dokumentären ”Radio Black Peter” som senare sändes på SVT under bästa sändningstid. Dokumentärfilmen och projektet resulterade också i en utställning med titeln: ”Pussel och pirater” på Västerbottens museum 2018. Utställningen vittnar om ett omfattande konstnärligt forskningsarbete om de första radiopiraterna i Sverige 1952 och den lilla byn Lomsjö i Västerbotten.
Som alltid då Wikström gestaltar något, så gör hon det med stor känsla och kunskap om både material och rumslighet.
Hennes arbete har under de senaste åren rört sig mellan många olika teman och uttryck.
Från projekt som exempelvis; ”Emergency Exit” till projektet; ”The Bubble Floats Before”. Delar ur ”Emergency Exit” visades i Umeå konsthall 2015 under titeln ”Radioskugga”.
Här tar Wikström med oss in i ”The Corner House” i Riga, där hon låter fotografi av ljusreflexer från exitskyltar berätta delar av stadens historia. ”The Bubble Floats Before” är en videoinstallation som bygger på dialog mellan konstnären själv och den brittiska roman- och novellförfattaren Mary Shelley (1797-1851).
Ett psykologiskt möte mellan två kvinnor, vars liv och tankar flätas samman.
En poetisk och mångbottnad videogestaltning. Verket visades senast i London 2019.
Förutom ett starkt och särpräglat konstnärskap är Helena Wikström en drivande kraft bakom Umeås konstscen. Detta bland annat genom sitt mångåriga engagemang i det konstnärsdrivna Galleri Verkligheten och som konstnärlig ledare för Vita Kuben på Norrlandsoperan.”

Radio Black Peter

The documentary film Radio Black Peter can now be seen on SVT play until the 18th of June.

A radio historical documentary that tells the story about how the first radio pirates in Sweden, two woodsmen from Lomsjö challenged the swedish radio monopoly while the Swedish Security police where chasing them throughout the northern Swedish forests.
