Not for the first time and far from the last but for the first time - for the first time in human history we understood that it was our fault that this species was gone forever. The world was forever changed and the perfect chain was broken even though God's benevolence and abundance would not really have allowed this to happen.
In Harriet Löwenhjelm's poem Jakt på fågel from 1913, she speaks about a man who shoot a dodo and how it falls from the sky and lands in the space where the fish live. The dodo was in reality unable to fly. Almost one meter high, quite sturdy and relatively fearless when the Dutch sailors came to Mauritius in the beginning of the 17-th century. A hundred years later it was extinct. The strange thing is that nobody today knows exactly what it looked like. Whats left are fossils and drawings and paintings in which the dodo is presented very differently. I continue my search for this star of extinct species that still continues to amaze us.
